Apple has announced its 31st annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will commence on June 22, but will be entirely online.

The move is due to the coronavirus pandemic that has canceled hundreds of conferences, festivals and other gatherings around the globe.

WWDC will be free for everyone and will host the tech giant’s Swift Student Challenge which gives student developers the opportunity to showcase their apps.

Apple executives usually reveal new iOS software and features set for its fall flagship iPhone, but with the production delays the firm faced earlier this year it is unclear what is in store.

Apple has announced its 31st annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will commence on June 22, but will be entirely online. The move is due to the coronavirus pandemic that has canceled hundreds of conferences, festivals and other gatherings around the globe

Apple announced it was moving the conference online back in March, but had yet to set a date.

The firm also said it would give $1 million to compensate businesses in the area for lost revenue and jobs as a result of it moving the conference online.

Developers usually spend five days at the conference, where they get hands-on labs, presentations and sessions with Apple engineers.

However, due to the coronavirus, they will have to watch it play out from the comfort of their homes.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: ‘WWDC20 will be our biggest yet, bringing together our global developer community of more than 23 million in an unprecedented way for a week in June to learn about the future of Apple platforms.’

‘We can’t wait to meet online in June with the global developer community and share with them all of the new tools we’ve been working on to help them create even more incredible apps and services.’

‘We look forward to sharing more details about WWDC20 with everyone as we get closer to this exciting event.

Apple is continuing its Swift Student Challenge, which saw attendance of more than 250 students last year.

Students use the Swift Playgrounds app for iPad and Mac to create innovative products, which they can submit now through May 17.

Winners will receive an exclusive WWDC20 jacket and pin set.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said: ‘As we look forward to WWDC20, although our gathering will be virtual this year, we want to recognize and celebrate the creative contributions of our young developers from around the world.

‘We can’t wait to see this next generation of innovative thinkers turn their ideas into a reality through the Swift Student Challenge.’

Last year, Apple used WWDC 19 to give people a more in-depth look at its high-end Mac Pro desktop, so the tech giant may have a few things in store with the audience.
