Chelsea set to offer Thiago Silva a new one-year deal after Brazilian defender, 36, capped impressive campaign by helping the Blues to Champions League glory

Chelsea are reportedly ready to reward veteran defender Thiago Silva with a new-one year deal after playing a pivotal role in their success this season.

The 36-year-old arrived on a free transfer from PSG last summer under Frank Lampard, and was written-off as being too old to thrive in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has now proved the signing was a masterstroke.

Thiago Silva lifted the Champions League for the first time in his career on Saturday night

His experience, leadership and rock-solid defending have been crucial for the Blues at they won the Champions League, reached the FA Cup final and finished fourth in the Premier League.

According to the Sun, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel will offer the centre-back a new one-year contract.

After Saturday’s final Silva paid tribute to Lampard, who guided the Blues through the Champions League group stages this season before losing his job in January.

‘It was special, it was my first year here,’ Silva added.

‘Tuchel changed everything, the team mentality. But it’s also important to talk about Lampard.

‘Without him, it was difficult for me to win here, thanks to him for letting me sign here.’
