A four-year old girl has died after being pulled unresponsive from the water north of Newcastle in New South Wales after a kayaking accident. 

The child was on the water at Mallabula Point in Port Stephens on Tuesday afternoon about 2.30pm when the incident unfolded. 

Paramedics rushed the toddler to John Hunter Hospital after she suffered a cardiac arrest but she could not be revived, reports 7 News.

A 35-year-old woman was also treated by ambulance officers at the scene and is in a stable condition. 

Police has commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. 

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
