Three police officers have been injured in a shootout with a gunman who barricaded himself in an apartment on Wednesday night.

The officers from Wilmington, Delaware, are in a stable condition after they were rushed to hospital.

Dozens of police cars, fire trucks and a SWAT team were on the scene after the shooting at about 10.30pm.

The shooting took place on North Market Street in Wilmington’s Brandywine village neighborhood.

Several blocks were closed early on Thursday morning as the gunman remained shut inside the apartment during the standoff.

Officers were seen carrying long rifles while others took cover behind vehicles. 

Nearby residents were asked to shelter and not approach the scene until they received further instructions.

The order was lifted by 10.30am on Thursday as police announced there was ‘no immediate threat to the public’. 

Officers were seen using a fire truck ladder to enter the building and minutes later, a woman and small child were brought down.

Their connection to the shooting is not known and police have not revealed if any arrests have been made.

One officer has been released from hospital but the other two are receiving surgery and are in a stable condition. 

The investigation is still ongoing.  

Delaware Senator Chris Coons said: ‘I am praying for the wounded officers of the Wilmington Police Department and thankful that they are in stable condition, on the path toward a speedy recovery. 

‘I’m grateful for their service and thinking about the first responders and the residents of Wilmington impacted by this tragic incident.’
