England take on Ukraine in an enticing Euro 2020 quarter-final encounter in Rome’s Stadio Olympico on Saturday night.  

It’s the first time Gareth Southgate‘ side will have played away from Wembley, having reached the last-eight without conceding a single goal. 

England were pragmatic but uninspiring as they cruised through the group stages with 1-0 victories over Croatia and the Czech Republic sandwiching an entertaining 0-0 draw against rivals Scotland. 

The Three Lions stepped it up a notch as they claimed an historic 2-0 win over Germany in the last-16, with Raheem Sterling claiming his third goal of the tournament, while captain Harry Kane got off the mark with a crucial header. 

Ukraine, managed by the legendary Andriy Shevchenko, have had a less straightforward route to the quarter-finals, having qualified for the knockouts as one of the four-best third-placed sides, before sealing a dramatic 2-1 win over Sweden in the last-16 thanks to a last-gasp extra-time winner.    

Wembley awaits the winner for the semi-final, which will be contested against either Denmark or the Czech Republic on Wednesday, July 7.

When is Ukraine vs England? 

The quarter-final clash between Ukraine and England will take place on Saturday, July 3.  

The match will start at 8pm BST and will be played at the Stadio Olympico in Rome, which will hold an expected 18,000 fans.

Elsewhere, potential semi-final opponents the Czech Republic and Denmark will have already played their quarter-final encounter earlier in the evening, with kick-off at 5pm.

Ukraine vs England will be broadcast for free on BBC One, with coverage starting at 7.30pm.

How did Ukraine qualify for the quarter-finals? 

While England are yet to concede a goal at this year’s European Championships, Ukraine have actually won just one of four games within the initial 90 minutes. 

They started their tournament with an entertaining 3-2 defeat to Holland, falling marginally short despite coming back from 2-0 down as Denzel Dumfries headed in an 85th-minute winner.  

Ukraine then narrowly overcame the challenge of North Macedonia, who lost all three of their group games, winning 2-1. 

Then came there final group game, where they lost 1-0 to Austria. However, they scraped through to the knockouts by virtue of a greater goal difference than Finland.  

Ukraine booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a dramatic victory over Sweden, with Artem Dovbyk’s last-gasp extra-time winner sealing a 2-1 victory at Hampden.

How did England qualify for the quarter-finals?

As stated, England weren’t at their best during the group stages, but they topped the quartet with little discomfort in the end. 

The Three Lions kicked off their tournament with a largely comfortable 1-0 win over Croatia, before drawing 0-0 in a nail-biter against Scotland. Needing a victory to secure top-spot, they then defeated the Czech Republic 1-0. 

There had been some thought that finishing second would have presented a better path to the final for England, but that has certainly proved not to be the case. 

And in beating Germany 2-0 in the quarter-final, it’s now Ukraine and one of Denmark or the Czech Republic who stand in England’s way of the final.

Team news

England came through their victory over Germany unscathed, with the full squad at Southgate’s disposal for the impending clash. 

After opting for a four-man defence throughout the group stages, Southgate utilised a three-at-the-back formation against Germany, with Bukayo Saka getting the nod over the likes of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden. 

It was Grealish who made the difference after coming on as a second-half substitute, however, playing a vital role in Sterling’s opener and providing the assist for Kane’s conclusive header.  

Whether Southgate switches up his formation once more or not, the Aston Villa captain has certainly put forward his case for a starting role. 

Meanwhile, Southgate does the possibility of suspensions to contemplate, with midfield duo Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips both picking up yellow cards against Germany.

After keeping another clean sheet in their impressive win over Germany, it comes as no surprise that England are the overwhelming favourites to prevail on Saturday once more. 

As stated, it’s the first game England will play outside of London and Wembley, which could make an impact.   

But they are still favoured at 1/5 to get the win nonetheless, while Ukraine are the underdogs at 7/2. Meanwhile, a draw after 90 minutes is at 17/5.
