A three-month old baby has died after her and her mother were hit by a train in Melbourne‘s east.

Emergency crews rushed to the horrifying scene at Kumbada Ave in Upwey at 5.10pm, where a pram was found alongside the tracks.

The child suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to hospital while the mother’s wounds were deemed ‘non-life threatening’.

She was been taken to hospital under police guard as detectives investigate ‘all possibilities’ surrounding the incident.

The site has been cordoned off with police tape as teams from Victoria Police, Ambulance, CFA and SES comb the scene.

Police warned of major delays on the Belgrave line, with buses replacing trains between Belgrave and Upper Ferntree Gully.
