A heroic surfer who revealed he was single in a viral interview on the Today Show in 2013 returned to the show this morning alongside his wife.

Angus McNicol from Byron Bay appeared on the breakfast show eight years ago after he and his friend Nick Chalmers bravely jumped into dangerous surf at Kirra to rescue a French couple who were caught in the wash near rocks.

The pair’s interview went viral as Today Show host Karl Stefanovic burst into hysterical laughter at long-haired Angus’s revelation that it felt ‘really good’ to rescue the female half of the couple.

Stefanovic later described McNicol as a ‘woolly mammoth’.

The interview ended with confirmation that McNicol was single and looking for a partner, with Stefanovic inviting female viewers to contact the show if they wanted to be put in touch with the single life saver.

This morning he reappeared on the show alongside his wife, Brooke McNicol Boyschau, who revealed she first spotted McNichol before she’d seen the famous rescue interview.

‘I actually hadn’t seen the segment prior to first witnessing Angus in his natural habitat,’ she said.

‘The first time I saw Angus was on the beach, he’d sort of emerged from the water [and] I thought, righto, calm down, who is this?’

Brooke revealed she had a drink with McNichol before a friend made her watch the viral segment featuring his brave feat and then urged her to track down the hairy hero, who she described as ‘Aquaman’.

McNichol charmed the nation when he described the moment he rescued the female French backpacker eight years ago.

‘I calmed her down and I asked her what her name was and she asked me what my name was,’ he said. ‘But then she said I was her angel, so I was pretty happy.’

‘You don’t get called “angel” every day.’

Stefanovic then made it something of a mission to find Angus a partner, later inviting him back on the show to detail what he was looking for in a wife.
