Expats living in Australia have been ‘blown away’ by the country’s supermarket shopping trolleys, which many say are superior to those in the US and Canada.

In a recent TikTok video, Australian shopper Paniora Nukunuku raved about how trolleys can be taken without inserting a coin.

The social worker, who posts as @pnuks, also praised their wheels that ‘move independently’ from one another, and safety features such as grooves on the back wheels which prevent trolleys from flying out of control on travelators.

For these reasons, Mr Nukunuku said Australian trolleys are better than their American counterparts, known as shopping carts.

‘I want this video to reach American TikTok,’ he says at the start of the video.

‘On Australian trolleys the wheels move independently from each other as you can see. The other thing is that our wheels look like this.’

Mr Nukunuku then pans the camera to the back wheels of the trolley, which he explains are indented to slot securely into the grooves of shopping centre travelators.

‘They stick in the grooves so you don’t have to worry about it flying away,’ he added.

The clip, which has been viewed 418,800 times since it was posted online on Tuesday, swiftly sparked widespread agreement.

‘I’m a Canadian studying in Sydney. The back wheels freely blew my mind when I got here,’ one man replied.

‘Not gonna lie, this is fascinating,’ said a second.

Others were amazed that you can take trolleys outside shops in Australia.

Mr Nukunuku also praised safety features such as grooves on the back wheels (pictured) which prevent trolleys from flying out of control on travelators

‘Wait, you can bring your cart around the whole mall?!’ one American woman wrote.

However some took issue with Mr Nukunuku’s claims, with one viewer saying there are plenty of supermarkets that have a coin requirement.

‘In Canberra pretty much all trolleys need a coin to unlock, it incentivises people to return them instead of dumping them in waterways and such,’ one man wrote.

Another added: ‘We have three Coles and to Woolies in my area and all require a coin to unlock the trolley.’
