Lukas Nmecha reveals Manchester City are ‘getting a top striker’ as he explains his Wolfsburg move

Lukas Nmecha reveals he is leaving Manchester City for Wolfsburg because Pep Guardiola is ‘getting another top striker’… amid talk of moves for Harry Kane and Erling Haaland

  • Manchester City lost Sergio Aguero this summer after his contract ran down
  • Harry Kane and Erling Haaland are both known targets for boss Pep Guardiola
  • Lukas Nmecha has been with the club since 2007 but finally left for Wolfsburg
  • The forward said opportunities will be limited with a new big name incoming

A big-money signing is inbound at Manchester City, according to Lukas Nmecha, who revealed he left the club after realising his opportunities would be limited by a new star frontman.

It’s a big summer for the Citizens after losing Etihad icon Sergio Aguero to Barcelona. Now, they’re searching for the successor to a man who scored 260 goals in sky blue.

Borussia Dortmund‘s 21-year-old prolific powerhouse Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane are favourites to slot in as Pep Guardiola’s go-to man up top.

Nmecha had been a City player since the age of eight, and after four loan spells he’d hoped Aguero’s departure would hand him a golden chance. However, the former England and Germany under-21 has realised there’s no use sticking around.

‘I still had one year of contract,’ Nmecha told Kicker after sealing an £11m move to Wolfsburg.

‘They’re getting another top striker, I don’t think my chances would have been very good there.’

Nmecha spent the 2019-20 season with Wolfsburg but despite only making a handful of appearances, clearly impressed. His brother Felix has also made the switch.

City fans will be delighted at the suggestion of a big move in the transfer window this summer, with Guardiola needing to bring in a goalscorer for their title defence.

The champions will have to compete with Chelsea for Haaland, with the Blues having already had a bid turned down amid a hot pursuit of the Norwegian sensation.

Dortmund are determined to hold onto Haaland for one more season, before his bargain £64m release clause can be activated in 12 months time.

Kane will also be tough to prise away from Tottenham, after new boss Nuno Espirito Santo defiantly insisted the lethal finisher was not for sale in his first press conference in the N17 hot seat.
