Tottenham Hotspur have completed their first outfield signing of the summer after landing Bryan Gil from Sevilla in a £21million move which sees Erik Lamela head in the opposite direction.

The north London side confirmed the move on their Twitter account, moments after teasing the announcement with a tweet reading ‘dos segundos’, which translates as Spanish for ‘two seconds’, in a response to a tweet from left-back Sergio Reguilon telling the club to announce the transfer of his Spanish compatriot.

Gil is the second new signing this summer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the arrival of goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta on loan.

Spurs revealed the signing of Gil by thanking ‘agent Reguilon’ who, responded with a fully capped up reply saying ‘HERE WE GO’ with a couple of emojis including a laughing face.

Reguilon is a former team-mate of Gil during their days at Sevilla, with the left-back having been part of their squad on loan from Real Madrid for the 2019-20 campaign where he won the Europa League shortly before he joined Spurs.

Gil will not be able to join up with the Spurs squad for now as the midfielder is away on international duty with Spain at the Tokyo Olympics.

His arrival also sees long-time servant Lamela head for Sevilla following eight years at Spurs, with the north London side bidding farewell to the Argentine with a tweet reading: ‘A player who gave everything for the badge. Thank you Erik Lamela.’

Gil spent last season on loan at LaLiga side Eibar but the 20-year-old impressed Spurs scouts despite the club being relegated.

In Tokyo, Gil started in his side’s 1-0 win over Australia on Sunday as he hopes to build on his promising potential shown during the early years of his career.

Lamela, 29, joined Tottenham from Roma in 2013 for a then club-record fee of £30m as the north Londoners splashed the £85m they had just received from Real Madrid for Gareth Bale.

But the Argentine has not quite had the impact he or Spurs would have hoped for.

He leaves Tottenham after making 257 appearances in all competitions in eight seasons, scoring 37 goals and providing 47 assists.

As well as giving his thanks to Spurs on his Twitter account, the Argentine also showed appreciation to the club’s fanbase.

He said: ‘Spurs fans, what a journey! I felt the shirt the same way you did. These memories will stay with me forever. I thank my teammates, the people at the club and the fans for cheering for me on in every game, I will miss you. I’m going to carry this club with me forever.’
