Andreas Pereira scored an outrageous volley as Manchester United and Brentford continued their preparations for the new Premier League season with a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a relatively strong starting line-up from those available to him at present as they had to work hard to beat the Premier League new boys in front of 30,000 fans at Old Trafford.

Playing in a front four with Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood, it was Anthony Elanga who opened the scoring for the Red Devils with a fine volley.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka picked out the 19-year-old inside the box and Elanga adjusted his body before firing a superb low effort past a helpless David Raya in the Brentford goal.

Elanga continued his fine pre-season form and gave a performance that showed he could be an option for Solskjaer in and around the first-team squad this season.

The Bees were only behind for eight minutes though as they made the most of some unconvincing United defending at a set piece.

The hosts failed to clear a corner and the loose ball dropped to Shandon Baptiste, who smashed the ball with the outside of his left foot and saw his effort fly into the back of the net off the woodwork.

United controlled the game for large periods in the first half and both Lingard and Greenwood wasted good chances.

Ivan Toney, Brentford’s talisman, was also inches away from giving them the lead just before the interval when Tariqe Fosu’s low cross was just too far in front of him.

But United restored their lead in the 50th minute when Pereira ran onto a floated clearance and smashed a volley into the top corner.

It smacked the woodwork on its way past Raya and was reminiscent of Paul Scholes’ incredible goal at Aston Villa in 2006.

United were not able to hold on for victory though and let the lead slip away for the second time on the night.

Substitute Bryan Mbeumo ensured Brentford left Old Trafford with a draw when he got to the ball ahead of Diogo Dalot, chopped back onto his left foot and curled the ball beautifully into the far corner.

United continue their pre-season at Championship side Preston on Saturday while Brentford are back in action against West Ham on the same day.
