Personal trainer Kayla Itsines reveals the things you’re doing in the gym that drive her mad

Personal trainer and the founder of the Sweat empire Kayla Itsines has revealed the things her clients do in the gym that drive her mad.

The 30-year-old CEO from Adelaide said there are three things she sees people do repeatedly in the gym that aren’t ‘good etiquette’, including not wiping down the equipment, not putting away the weights and not dismantling items before moving on.

‘Gym etiquette 101, from your person trainer,’ Kayla posted on Instagram.

‘I think gym etiquette is super important to be aware of, especially during a time when personal hygiene and social distancing is so important.’

Kayla highlighted that there are three things you can do every time you go to a gym to keep your trainer and everyone around you ‘safe and happy’.

‘These three simple steps make a big difference to you and the people training around you,’ Kayla said.

1. Put your weights back where they belong

The first thing you absolutely must do if you’re going to the gym is put your weights back where they belong once you’ve finished with them.

‘There is nothing worse than walking up to a half-empty dumbbell rack with identical-looking dumbbells scattered all over the floor,’ Kayla said.

Kayla said it’s almost as annoying when they’ve been put back, but they are out of order.

‘I suggest taking the time to wipe down your equipment after use, then carefully put them back in their place and in order for the next person to use,’ Kayla said.

Lighter dumbbells should go on top, while the heavier ones should go down at the bottom.

2. Wipe down your equipment

The second thing you need to do is wipe down every piece of equipment you use at the gym, because no one wants to ‘work out on a sweaty bench’.

‘Most gyms now have spray and/or wipes available around the gym’ Kayla said.

‘I suggest locating these before your workout.’

As soon as you’ve finished an exercise, the 30-year-old said she always sprays and wipes down both her equipment and benches to keep things sanitised and clean.

This is better than trying to all the cleaning at the end, where you might forget everything you’ve used.

3. Dismantle your equipment and put it away

Finally, Kayla said you absolutely must dismantle every piece of equipment you use, and put it away.

‘Want to know what turns a 30-minute workout into a 50-minute one? People that don’t dismantle their machines leaving you to do it all on your own!’ Kayla said.

When you’re finished using machines like the leg press or squat rack, the Adelaide PT suggests taking the weights off and putting everything back in its ‘original place’.

‘Dismantling your equipment takes 30 seconds and it shouldn’t be left to the next person to do it, especially if the weights are heavy!’ Kayla said.

More than 20,000 people who saw Kayla’s ideas said they found it helpful, and many PTs whole-heartedly agreed with her tips.

‘As a fellow trainer I can’t thank you enough for this post,’ one person commented.

‘Can I add don’t bring half a tonne of chalk and leave the weights area looking like we had a snowstorm, please and thank you!’

Another added: ‘I know the pain. I worked in a gym for 12 years’.
